Last summer, Newcastle United became the first club in Tier Three to go full-time and employ their players and manager, Becky Langley, permanently, so it’s no surprise they’re sitting at the top of the National League North.
Newcastle currently have an eight-point lead at the top of the table, but Langley and her players are laser-focused on achieving back-to-back promotions after a dramatic final day of last season.
Before the season started, Newcastle were able to prise players such as Emma Kelly, Bridget Galloway and Amber Keegan Stobbs who all previously played in the Championship which had them as firm favourites for the title.
Becky Langley desperate to earn another promotion
A defeat against Nottingham Forest two weeks ago put a dent in their title charge, however, it’s still firmly in their hands and Langley isn’t ready to lose grip on another promotion.
“We’ve been really bold with the signings we’ve made,” Becky Langley admitted. “The owners have invested in the girls and we’re absolutely delighted.
“I think we want to be pushing on now, we don’t want to be in this league next season, so we’ve got to do everything we can to make sure we’re not.”
Newcastle’s wealthy owners continue to invest
In recent weeks Newcastle have signed Beth Lumsden from Portsmouth as well as Lia Cataldo and Paige Bailey-Gayle from Crystal Palace which has reinforced the idea they’re not here to take part.
Amanda Staveley previously spoke about how she wishes to have both the Men and Women’s teams in the top division and play Champions League football. However, an immediate promotion to the Championship is certainly needed.
The Lasses have a crunch fixture this Sunday against Burnley, knowing that if they just avoid defeat then the finish line will come just a bit more in sight, and with the embarrassment of riches Langley has in her squad, they will be massive favourites.
