Kingsmeadow will welcome Manchester City tomorrow evening as two of the Women’s Super Leagues heavyweights clash for the first time this season.

Last Time Out: Chelsea vs Manchester City

The opening weekend of the Women’s Super League provided some unexpected results across the board including losses for both Chelsea and Manchester City.

Manchester City travelled to Villa Park, in which Carla Ward’s side picked up all three points in a seven-goal thriller. New signing Rachel Daly marked her debut with two goals, an assist and a player of the match performance.

Meanwhile, newly promoted Liverpool hosted the Champions Chelsea. Fran Kirby put the blues ahead inside five minutes after converting a penalty. However, American striker Katie Stengel secured the win after scoring two second half penalties.

Previous encounters between Chelsea and Manchester City

The most recent meeting between these two sides came at Wembley in the Women’s FA Cup final, in which Emma Hayes side were successful and lifted the trophy after a 3-2 win in extra time.

Chelsea were also dominant in the Women’s Super League as they won both fixtures by an aggregate score of 5-0.

However, Manchester City did pick up some silverware last season as they beat Chelsea 3-1 to add a fourth Conti Cup to their collection.

Team News

Emma Hayes could potentially be without Pernille Harder for a second weekend after she was replaced in the line-up against Liverpool due to picking up a hamstring injury during the warmup. Her availability will be assessed ahead of Sunday, as for the rest of the squad they are all fit for selection.

For the visitors, Australian international Alanna Kennedy could be in-line to feature after failing to make the substitutes bench last weekend although she travelled to Aston Villa. This comes after the defender picked up an injury whilst representing the Matildas last month.

It is also unknown whether new signing Yui Hasegawa will be involved in the squad despite being pictured in training this week.

Predicted Lineups: Chelsea vs Manchester City

Chelsea: Musovic, Charles, Bright, Buchanan, Eriksson, Cuthbert, Ingle, Kirby, Reiten, Kerr and England.

Manchester City: Roebuck, Casparij, Houghton, Greenwood, Stokes, Alexiandri, Coombs, Angeldahl, Hemp, Shaw and Raso.

Players to Watch

Chelsea: Guro Reiten

The Norwegian winger can cause a threat to ManCity’s defence, her pace, trickery and ability to break the lines can prove difficult to contain. She is also a proven goal scorer, scoring 7 goals last season, including the winner when these two sides met last season at Kingsmeadow.

Manchester City: Bunny Shaw

Manchester City’s number 21 provides a huge attacking option upfront for Gareth Taylor’s side. Her aerial ability is very valuable on set pieces. The striker is also physical and can hold up the ball and bring others into play in advanced areas.

Where To Watch

The match will be broadcasted live for UK viewers on Sky Sports, with kick off at 4pm.
