Emma Hayes took charge of her first US Women’s National Team (USWNT) match on Saturday and sealed the milestone with a win.

The former Chelsea head coach enjoyed a 4-0 victory over South Korea in an international friendly in Colorado. The two sides last met in 2021, when the United States pulled off a resounding 6-0 victory.

The US have suffered just one defeat in 2024, winning eight of their nine games. South Korea have lost just once in their last seven matches, losing 5-1 to Portugal in February.

How it went

Following a quiet opening spell, the US broke the deadlock with just ten minutes remaining of the opening half. Mallory Swanson bagged the opener, firing the ball home from inside the area.

Hayes’ side scored their second of the afternoon just four minutes later as Tierna Davidson turned the ball home from a well-worked corner routine. The No.12’s header planted the ball beyond Kim Jung-mi, sending the hosts into the break with a comfortable lead.

Three minutes into the second half, Davidson claimed her second of the match. She again headed the ball in from a set piece — the goal appeared to put the game firmly out of the visitors’ reach. The US continued to dominate the possession throughout the second half, with South Korea unable to find a foothold in the tie for prolonged periods.

Swanson snatched her brace in the 74th minute of the game. The attack stemmed from a failed clearance by the visitors, with the ball falling to Swanson’s feet on the edge of the area. The perfectly placed shot found the bottom corner of the net to round off a perfect start to Hayes’ USWNT era.

The US and South Korea will meet again on Tuesday, June 5th, at Allianz Field in Minnesota.
