‘Hopefully, there’ll be celebrations’ – Erin Nelson hopeful of Newcastle’s promotion chances

Newcastle United lineup against Barnsley in the FA Cup.

Erin Nelson is hoping for post-match celebrations on Sunday when Newcastle United travel to face Barnsley, knowing a win will see them promoted.

This season has been a tough one for Newcastle who let a precious lead slip away at Hull City earlier in the season, which now means they must equal Durham Cetsria’s result on Sunday.

Newcastle head into the game top of the table via goal difference and it will require a 10-goal swing in Durham’s favour to see them leapfrog the Magpies.

While it could end in jubilation for Newcatsle, it hasn’t been plain sailing for Nelson who’s battled against a long-term injury and only made a handful of appearances this term.

However, she has proven he worth under Becky Langley by starting back-to-back league games and netting two last week against Bradford.

Erin Nelson dreaming of promotion

“It’s amazing to just be top of the league,” Nelson said. “All the girls are buzzing but obviously, we’ve still got one more game to go, so we’re focussing on that.”

“It’s not done yet and we can’t get ahead of ourselves.”

The Lasses know it certainly won’t be an easy game though having scrapped past Barnsley twice this season 1-0 and 2-1 respectively, with the latter coming at St James’ Park.

Nelson will be hoping to keep up her rich vein of form on Sunday and help guide Newcastle to the league title and achieve their aim of promotion.

Newcastle not taking Barnsley lightly

“We’ve got to put in a shift [on Sunday] and hopefully, there’ll be celebrations,” Nelson added.

“We don’t stop, we’re relentless and we’re going out there to score goals.”

“Confidence is a big thing for us, we want to be able to play our football and win in style.”

Both Newcatsle and Durham have away games to round off what has been a scintillating and nail-biting season.
