Hayes pushes for Beth England to feature in SheBelieves Cup

Chelsea’s winning streak continues after a 2-0 win over Birmingham City thanks to goals from Guro Reiten and Beth England.

Beth England’s standout performance against Birmingham City had Emma Hayes pushing for the striker to start for England in the upcoming SheBelieves Cup.

Chelsea’s Jonna Andersson’s low cross into the box a minute from the break hit several players before finding Guro Reiten, who simply had to tap it over the line, giving the Blues a 1-0 lead at half-time.

England grabbed the second in the 58th minute with a right-footed strike assisted by Erin Cuthbert’s pinpoint through ball.

Chelsea’s No.9 almost made it 3-0 when hitting the woodwork 75 minutes in.

‘The best English Number Nine’

Hayes believes the 25-year-old, along with others in her squad, should be picked by Lionesses boss Phil Neville.

“She’s marvellous,” said Hayes. “I’ve said it before, she’s the best English number nine in the country.

“I push him [Neville] to put every Chelsea player in his team because, as far as I am concerned, there are not enough in the England side. My job would be to remind him that we are unbeaten and all of my players deserve to start.”

Wales international Sophie Ingle also praised Chelsea team-mate England, adding:  “She’s a great girl for us, she’s scoring goals and that’s the most important thing.

“You have to go off performance and I think Phil would be stupid not to pick her. She’s scoring week in, week out. If you’re performing, you should be called up to your senior international team.”

England’s goal took her Women’s Super League tally to 13 for the season, only one behind Arsenal striker Vivianne Miedema, as Chelsea claimed an eighth consecutive win in all competitions.

Brianna Visalli and Rachel Williams  — celebrating her 100th WSL cap — caused several problems for Birmingham at times with their link-up play out wide, but it was not enough to get the visitors on the scoresheet.

Chelsea’s win keep them second in the table, a point below Manchester City. They will face the league leaders on February 23 at the Academy Stadium.
