Jenni Hermoso has been called up to the Spanish national team for the first time since they lifted the World Cup in Sydney, Australia.

The Spanish superstar has been at the centre of a trial involving former president of the Royal Spanish Federation, Luis Rubiales, who performed a ‘sexist act‘ on the former Barcelona star.

Hermoso is one of the most decorated and skilled players to have ever pulled on the Spanish jersey, but seemingly needed ‘protection’ prior to the last squad.

Hermoso – alongside some of her other teammates such as Alexia Putellas – have since testified in a Spanish court of law about what Rubiales did on August 20 in Syndey.

According to the new Spain manager, Motse Tome, Jenni Hermoso needed to be protected – from what is still unclear – and that is why he was absent from the last squad announcement.

The last time Spanish players were called up to represent their country they revoked that motion and went on strike, before then managing to come to an agreement about fundamental changes behind the scenes within the RFEF.

Have other players refused to play for Spain?

While Hermoso is now back with her World Cup-winning teammates, not everyone is ready for a return as Mapi Leon and Patri Guijarro remain long-term absentees as they call for further changes.

Spain are set to play their second round of Nations League matches later this month against Italy and Switzerland, respectively, and all eyes will be on Hermoso and if she is handed minutes which warrant her ability.
