Brazilian international Débora Cristiane de Oliveira, otherwise known as Debinha, has signed for the Kansas City Current.
The deal is set to run through to 2024, with the option of extending for a third year.
Debinha’s signature was under scrutiny as many believed she was Europe-bound after announcing her departure from the North Carolina Courage.
“We are thrilled to welcome Debinha to Kansas City,” said Kansas City Current co-owners Angie and Chris Long, via the club website.
“Debinha is one of the most talented, accomplished, and well-known players in the world. Her name is synonymous with excellence. We can’t wait for Kansas City to have the special opportunity to watch Debinha play and cheer her on.”
While at North Carolina Courage, the midfielder made 100 appearances with 35 goals and 17 assists. In her six year-stint, she won the NWSL Championship in 2018 and 2019.
During what was her final season, Debinha found the back of the net 12 times as the Courage staged a late surge for the play-offs.
“As a professional athlete, I always want to get better and to be on a competitive team that fights for titles, with excellent professionals,” the Brazilian said. “I’m sure it will help me in that goal and Kansas City showed that last season.”
Last season’s runners-up have a heavily bolstered midfield, having acquired Morgan Gautrat and Vanessa DiBernardo towards the end of 2022 from Chicago Red Stars.
The club also gave contract extensions to key players like Kate Del Fava, Alexis Loera and Hailie Mace. A clear intent to improve on a stellar 2022 season.
