The Manchester Derby is often a tense and action packed affair and the first edition of the 2026/27 WSL season was exactly that. Goals from Bunny Shaw and Elisabeth Terland saw both sides take a single point from the match.

How It Went

It was the visitors who enjoyed the better start to the game with the Sky Blues dominating the early possession. It wasn’t long, however, until the hosts gained a real foothold in the tie. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland and Andrea Medina all had good chances in the opening half however the match remained goalless as the two sides went in at the break.

The second half began in much the same way, with neither side able to make anything of their chances. The 66th minute finally saw the deadlock broken as Bunny Shaw fired the ball beyond Phallon Tullis-Joyce. The Reds continued to dominate the tie, having several good chances as the tie drew on.

Terland finally found the back of the net for the home side with less than a minute of the 90 remaining. The late goal meant both sides took just a single point from the match with City slipping to second in the table whilst United occupy fourth.
