Newcastle United 7-0 Halifax: The Magpies maintain their dominance in the National League

It was the perfect start to 2024 for Newcastle United who put on yet another stunning display at home thumping Halifax Women 7-0.

The Lasses have now scored 18 goals in their last two matches which have both been in front of their loyal and fanatic fans. Last time out it was Jasmine McQuade who bagged a hat-trick, but that was saved for Katie Baker this weekend.

Barker netted two first-half goals before a rather dubious third came in the second-half, but the work rate she put in on and off the ball warranted a bit of good fortune.

Newcastle all but put the game to bed after 15 minutes with Barker and Georgia Gibson scoring from close range. Those quickfire strikes knocked the stuffing out of Halifax and allowed the Lasses to dictate the game.

A great low ball across the box wasn’t held by Flaherty, which allowed Barker to smash the ball home with it basically already on the line.

It was an utterly dominant display from the Lasses in the opening exchanges with Georgia Gibson doubling the lead before the 15-minute mark.

Newcastle were having a field day down the left-hand side, with Jasmine McQuade floating a ball to the back post, allowing Gibson to thump a header home.

It was simply too easy, once again, for Becky Langley’s side who stormed into a 3-0 lead before the half-hour mark when Barker doubled her tally with a long-range strike.

It wasn’t even half-time and the Halifax players were already out on their feet and looked defeated. The visitors failed to clear a free kick further than Emma Kelly who took full advantage and rifled one beyond the helpless Flaherty.

Newcastle scored a quickfire double in the second half with Katie Barker sealing her hat-trick, before Hannah Greenwood danced through the defence before scoring her first league goal of the season.

A perfect afternoon was rounded off for the Lasses when winger Tyler Dodds scored her first goal for the club since signing in the summer. Dodds admitted her New Year resolution was to score for the Toon this season.

Newcastle are still unbeaten this season and have not tasted defeat in a competitive game since December 2022, although their upcoming clash against Manchester United could end that impressive run.
