For the second time this season, Angel City FC has beat a top-tier team to bank two wins out of three so far.

Angel City took on the Washington Spirit away at Audi Field, winning 1-0 after a stunning strike from Christen Press.

Both teams came into the match with losses in their previous outings. Angel City’s loss to the Orlando Pride came as a shock to fans after they beat the North Carolina Courage the week prior. The Spirit lost to the Courage in a brutal Challenge Cup final that saw major injuries on both sides of the pitch.

Angel City’s 1-0 win over the Spirit has bumped them up to second place in the table, sitting behind league leaders San Diego Wave.

Highlights of the Game: Angel City FC vs Washington Spirit

The teams lined up with lethal attackers on both sides. Press for Angel City and Trinity Rodman for the Spirit were the two to look out for this match.

Early in the first half, both teams had some chances on goal but nothing too threatening. Rodman had a header in the 20th minute but it was just wide of the goal, proving to be one of the best chances from the home side.

Later in the 42nd minute, Press received the ball from center-back Vanessa Gilles and scored the first goal of the match. Press’s ability to maneuver in small spaces allowed her to curl the ball around Spirit’s Emily Sonnett and past the diving Aubrey Kingsbury.

The rest of the half saw Angel City on the front foot with two shots off-target.

Returning from halftime, the Spirit made their first substitution, bringing on Bayley Feist for Taylor Aylmer to push the attack. This half also saw a great matchup between Press and Rodman. Both players had a strong attack against each other. The matchup between the two was definitely excitement within the game.

The rest of the half saw a Spirit team looking for the win. They had chances but nothing was put into the back of the net. The lack of players like Kelley O’Hara and Andi Sullivan available for the match proved to be a disadvantage for the former NWSL Champions. Angel City’s Tyler Lussi also had a great match, as she played left-back for the first time ever and excelled.

Player of the Match: Christen Press

A solid option for Player of the Match goes to the one and only Christen Press.

Press took about an eight-month break starting in September of last year to focus on her mental health. Coming back, she has already been outstanding. The goal in this match shows her skill set which is typically seen with the USWNT.

The game-winning goal in this match is exactly what is needed from a player like her. Press’s return to Los Angles is proving to be the best move yet.
