Primera Iberdrola New Season Schedule Announced

Spain’s top women’s football league, the Primera Iberdrola will begin the 2020/21 season on October 4.

Initial talks decided the launch would commence on October 18th. However, following club requests, the date has been moved forward by two weeks.

Although this is the official starting date, not all clubs will open their new season on this commencing week. Rayo Vallecano will kickstart their campaign the following week.

Last season’s Copa de la Reina is also due to recommences. Although, an estimated restart date was also scheduled for October 4. A new date for the competition, which is currently int he semi-final stage, is yet to be announced.

The preliminary start date for the new season had been September 5, however due to Covid-19, it was forced into postponement.

The previous campaign had been brought to an abrupt close and Barcelona were awarded the title.

What impact the new calendar and the expanded league could have on the new season remains up in the air. Nevertheless, the congested fixture list and limited time could throw up many obstacles, particularly for teams who aren’t fully professional.
