Megan Rapinoe crowned 2019 Ballon d’Or winner

Megan Rapinoe has won the Ballon d’Or, beating Lucy Bronze and Alex Morgan as the top three players in women’s football according to France Football.

Rapinoe adds the Ballon d’Or to her name after winning the FIFPro ‘The Best’ award earlier in the autumn.

She scored the first of two USWNT goals in the World Cup final as they beat the Netherlands to win their fourth World Cup.

Megan Rapinoe scored six goals at the World Cup, leading the US to the final. She missed out on the historic clash with England in the semi-final through hamstring injury but returned in the final.

She calmly put her penalty away past Dutch goalkeeper Sari van Veenendaal to give the US the lead in the showdown. A lead that they would not give up.

Rapinoe finished fourth in the NWSL this year, captaining her Reign FC teammates to a 4-1 loss in the semi-finals of the competition.

The shortlist was made up of 20 of the world’s best. These players from all over the world – including Sam Kerr, Ada Hegerberg and Vivianne Miedema.

None of those three broke into the top three. Despite them combining for a total of 81 domestic goal contributions between them.

That doesn’t account for Champions League or World Cup goals.

Lucy Bronze finished second in the award. She played an integral part in the Lyon side that won their sixth Champions League title, their fourth on the bounce.

Alex Morgan rounded out the top three. She was also in the side that won the World Cup.

She scored six goals at the World Cup. Five of which were against Thailand in a 13-0 win.

She did not score a single goal in her six NWSL appearances for Orlando Pride this year.
