Linfield have confirmed that Northern Ireland international Rebecca McKenna has signed for FA Women’s Championship side Lewes FC.
McKenna was a key part of the Northern Ireland squad that qualified for Euro 2022. She put in two stellar performances over the course of the two legs.
This will be her first professional contract in the game. With her consistent level of performances, it’s a well-deserved move as she continues growing from strength to strength.
She made her debut for the Northern Ireland national team against Kazakhstan in 2018 as Northern Ireland won 2-0.
McKenna spent four seasons at Windsor Park after joining from rivals Glentoran in 2017. She collected an impressive number of medals along the way during her career at the club.
She helped the Blues pick up a number of different cups as well as the league title on two different occasions.
The 20-year-old is a versatile player as she can operate in both defence and in midfield. She also displayed leadership while captaining Linfield in the absence of Ashley Hutton who is recovering from an ACL injury.
McKenna signed off from Linfield on Monday evening, scoring a goal in her final game for the club as they lost out 5-2 to Danske Bank Women’s Premiership leaders Cliftonville.
She will fly out on Thursday to link up with her new teammates in East Sussex at the club that finished fifth in the league last season.
On her departure, Linfield boss Phil Lewis said: “Rebecca is highly respected by every player and staff member at the club. She leads by example and her encouragement and support of our younger players has been immense in what has been a difficult season to date.”
