Juventus’ Serie A title hopes suffered a significant blow at the weekend, as they fell to a narrow defeat to Sampdoria. While their title rivals slipped up, Roma went through a tough game against Como to record a 3-2 victory.

Let’s round up all the action from the final round of Serie A matches in 2023.

AC Milan 1-1 Napoli

Winless Napoli went agonisingly close to claiming their first victory of the season in Saturday’s away meeting with AC Milan. Following a goalless first half, the visitors took a surprise lead in the 58th minute. Elisa del Estal steered a header into the bottom corner after being picked out by Gina-Maria Chmielinski’s lofted cross. Napoli held out until the 96th minute when Emelyne Laurent cut inside and fired a right-foot shot past Doris Bačić. Despite salvaging a draw, the result will offer little comfort to a Milan side sitting in eighth place after failing to win any of their last six matches. As for Napoli, they remain bottom of the table with just two points to their name.

Sampdoria 1-0 Juventus

Sampdoria produced the surprise of the weekend after they claimed a narrow victory over five-time Italian champions Juventus on Saturday. After having an effort chalked off in the first half, Sampdoria went on to break the deadlock in the 80th minute. Juventus loanee Asia Bragonzi came off the bench to head home against her parent club and wrap up Sampdoria’s third Serie A win of the season Meanwhile, second-placed Juventus are now left six points adrift of title rivals Roma.

Pomigliano 0-2 Sassuolo

Sassuolo extended their unbeaten away run to four matches with a relatively comfortable victory over Pomigliano. Loreta Kullashi got her side up and running in the fourth minute when tapped in from close range. Lana Clelland went on to double Sassuolo’s advantage in the early stages of the second half. With Pomigliano unable to produce a response, Sassuolo could celebrate a victory that ensured they head into the new year in sixth place. As for Pomigliano, they are currently languishing in ninth position.

Como 2-3 Roma

Roma were forced to come from behind on two occasions to maintain their 100% record in the top flight. Dominika Škorvánková fired home the opening goal in the 35th minute to give Como a narrow half-time lead. Elena Linari levelled from the penalty spot before Miriam Picchi restored the home side’s advantage. After being handed another setback, Roma fought back through Lucia Di Guglielmo, who produced a powerful header from Emilie Haavi’s lofted cross.  Linari subsequently completed the Roma turnaround when she slotted home from the penalty spot for a second time.

Fiorentina 4-2 Inter

Fiorentina rounded off the calendar year with an entertaining win over Inter. The hosts had to overcome a half-time deficit after Michela Cambiaghi scored a second-minute opener. Verónica Boquete poked in an equaliser within five minutes of the restart before she netted a spot-kick to turn the game in Fiorentina’s favour. Cambiaghi then slid the ball under the onrushing Rachele Baldi to level the scoreline. After seeing her side pegged back, Boquete went on to thump home an unstoppable strike to wrap up her hat-trick. Michela Catena added a fourth in the closing stages to round off the scoring and move the hosts within two points of second-placed Juventus.
