The top three in Serie A enjoyed positive results in their first outings of the new year. Roma, Juventus and Fiorentina all collected victories on matchday 12 of the 2023/24 Serie A season.

Join us as we round up all the action from the first round of fixtures to take place following the winter break.

Napoli 2-4 Fiorentina

Third-placed Fiorentina began the new year with a successful away outing against Napoli. Verónica Boquete opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, squeezing the ball in at the near post with the help of a deflection. Michela Catena went on to double Fiorentina’s advantage within 12 minutes of the restart. The 24-year-old produced an emphatic header from Kaja Eržen’s inviting delivery to net her fourth goal in three matches.

Eli del Estal pulled a goal back from the penalty spot, before Salvatore Longo restored Fiorentina’s two-goal cushion. Napoli’s Alice Corelli went on to net the standout goal of the game in the 80th minute when she unleashed an unstoppable long-range strike.

Corelli’s thunderous effort ultimately counted for very little as Alexandra Jóhannsdóttir added a fourth to Fiorentina’s tally to round off a third consecutive victory.

Juventus 2-1 AC Milan

Juventus, who occupy second spot, remain two points ahead of Fiorentina after they edged out AC Milan on Saturday. Barbara Bonansea put the home side in front in the 25th minute. A corner from the right flank broke to the 32-year-old, who refused to pass up the chance to guide home her second goal of the Serie A season. Juventus were then pegged back when their former player, Andrea Stašková, slotted past Pauline Peyraud-Magnin from close range.

After going into the break on level terms, the hosts restored their lead through Sofia Cantore in the 52nd minute. The forward cut inside from the left flank, before drilling the ball into the top corner. With Milan unable to find a response, they fell to a narrow defeat that extended their winless run to seven matches.

Roma 3-0 Pomigliano

Evelyne Viens netted her sixth league goal of the season to get Roma off to the perfect start against Pomigliano. The Canada international drove inside from the left flank before drilling a right-foot shot into the bottom corner. As the contest moved towards the half-hour mark, Laura Feiersinger swept home from Lucia Di Guglielmo’s low cross to double the home side’s advantage.

Any lingering doubt over the destination of the three points was quashed by Emilie Haavi’s 52nd-minute effort. A corner broke to the 31-year-old, who was on hand to fire past the helpless Emilie Gavillet. While Roma remain six points clear at the top of the table, Pomigliano are languishing in ninth place.

Inter 0-1 Sassuolo

Inter are now winless in three matches after they suffered a narrow defeat in Sunday’s home clash with Sassuolo. The contest was ultimately decided in the 27th minute when Chiara Beccari netted her third goal of the Serie A season.

The Juventus loanee thumped the ball home after Loreta Kullashi’s cut-back had deflected into her path. Sassuolo kept Inter at bay for the remainder of the contest to claim a second straight win, which leaves them in sixth position and three points adrift of their fourth-placed opponents.

Como 0-1 Sampdoria

Like Sassuolo, Sampdoria also celebrated a second consecutive victory at the weekend. Eva Schatzer scored the decisive goal in the ninth minute when she produced a glancing header from Elisabetta Oliviero’s inviting cross. The visitors ultimately stood firm for the remainder of the contest to claim three precious points. The result helped move Sampdoria to within a point of fifth-placed Como, who have now failed to win any of their last six matches.
