The new season of the Swedish top flight is about to kick off and there is a lot to look forward to in the next months. With 14 teams in the Damallsvenskan, there have never been more teams in the league.

All of the squads are stacked with talented players and future superstars. However, there are six who the fans should keep an eye on in particular.

Teagan Micah (FC Rosengård)

Last summer, the reigning Champions of Sweden had to make up for the departure of their first-choice goalkeeper, Canadian gold medalist Stephanie Labbé. They reacted with the signing of another Olympian. Teagan Micah joined the Malmö side on a two-year basis and has established herself as the number 1 in goal since.

During the remainder of the 2021 season, the Australian international made seven appearances for Rosengård and kept two clean sheets. Her stats have improved a lot since.

Micah made one appearance during the pre-season. In addition, she started in all of Rosengård’s four games in their run to the final of the Swedish league cup. She conceded only once in those five matches.

Before joining the Swedish champions, Micah’s impressive performances made her Australia’s first-choice goalkeeper at the Olympic Games in Toyko. She combines vital international experiences with those from domestic games. The Australian will be a key player for Rosengård, as they seek to defend their title in 2022.

BK Häcken has many exciting players in their squad. One of them certainly is Josefine Rybrink. The 24-years-old defender joined the Gothenburg side from Kristianstads DFF at the end of 2021.

In the same year, she had made her senior debut for the Swedish national team. By now, Rybrink has earned four international caps.

Häcken lost several defenders during the last transfer windows. Therefore, the Swedish youngster had to step up right from the beginning of her spell at the club. Fittingly, Rybrink brings a lot of domestic experience from her 56 games in a Kristianstads jersey.

The defender is an ambitious player with a hunger for titles and trophies. In 2022, she started in all of Häcken’s seven games so far. With more playing time ahead, the new season of the Damallsvenskan will be the next step in Rybrink’s promising career.

Tove Almqvist (Djurgården IF)

Another player who begins the 2022 season at a new club is Tove Almqvist. The defender left her former side Vittsjö GIK to strengthen the backline of Djurgården. With a total amount of 101 appearances in the Damallsvenskan since 2014, she is no stranger to the Swedish top flight.

However, Almqvist missed the whole season of 2020 with a ruptured ACL. The injury put an abrupt end to her career at the Swedish National team, where she had made several appearances for the youth squads.

Almqvists transfer to Djurgården marks a new chapter in her career, as she prepares for her first full season since the serious injury.

So far, the defender has started in five out of seven games for her new club in 2022. As she aims to find back to old strength, Almqvist has the potential to become a leading figure for her team in the new season.

Sofie Bredgaard (Linköpings FC)

In addition to the Swedish sides, Danish clubs are also known for producing great talents. One of them is midfielder Sofie Bredgaard, who joined Linköpings FC in 2020.

With 31 appearances to her name, she has developed into an important player for the team. During the 2021 season, the Danish youngster scored two goals and provided the same amount of assists.

These numbers are expected to rise in the next months. Bredgaard already made it to the scoresheet several times throughout pre-season. Her first call-up to the Danish National Team seems to be only a matter of time.

With her offensive strength, Bredgaard directs attacks from midfield. Also, she sets important impulses in front of goal even if she doesn’t score herself. These qualities will be vital for Linköping as they aim to take back one of the top spots in the 2022 league table.

Kyra Cooney-Cross (Hammarby IF)

Stockholm side Hammarby made headlines with the signing of Australian international Kyra Cooney-Cross. The youngster proved her immense potential during the Matildas’ run at the 2021 Olympic Games.

The two-year spell in Sweden will be her first one in Europe. At Hammarby, she can demonstrate her qualities on the big football stage while maximising her potential.

Known for her excellent passing, Cooney-Cross is always good for goals and assists. In addition, the Australian is very versatile in attack. She can play either as a forward or on the wing.

This will be more than beneficial for Hammarby who gain in offensive depth and danger with the promising signing. The Australian currently plays for Melbourne Victory and will join her new team once the W-League has come to an end.

Johanna Rytting Kaneryd (BK Häcken)

Many fans wouldn’t be surprised if the 2022 season is Johanna Rytting Kandery’s last in the Damallsvenskan. Long known for her potential at Häcken, she gained international attention during previous appearances for the Swedish National Team.

She made impressive 81 appearances in the league since 2017. However, the offensive midfielder started to blossom after joining the Gothenburg side in 2021. Kaneryd scored five goals in her first season at Häcken and provided two assists.

After the first months of 2022, she is already close to exceeding these figures. As she netted four times during pre-season and her team’s run to the final of the Swedish league cup, Kaneryd has established herself as a vital part of Häcken’s offense.

With her dynamism and her speed, she poses a threat long before the opponent’s goal. Her qualities make Kaneryd the next star player who developed in the Damallsvenskan. The audience should enjoy her performances for Häcken, as long as she is still part of their squad.
