Southampton crowned National League South champions after win over Portsmouth

Southampton celebrate winning the FA Women's National League South trophy

Southampton have won the National League South after beating rivals Portsmouth 2-0 in a derby clash.

The Saints secured the title in front of more than 5,000 fans at St Mary’s Stadium — one of the host venues for the upcoming 2022 European Championships this summer.

It was a level affair to begin with, but Southampton’s pressure paid off when Sophia Pharoah broke the deadlock just before half-time.

A second goal courtesy of Lucia Kendall just after the restart put the game to bed and edged the Saints over the finish line to title glory.

Southampton have lost just one of their 24 matches played so far this season. With 21 wins and two draws, the south coast outfit has been in blistering form — boasting a goal difference of 83. They needed just one more win to wrap up the league and a perfect result against derby rivals Portsmouth sealed the deal.

The Saints lead the table on 65 points, seven points ahead of second place Ipswich Town, with two games still to play.

What happens next?

The result confirms that Southampton will play against Wolverhampton at Stockport County’s Edgeley Park in a playoff to decide who will be promoted into the Championship next season.

Southampton will also face Huddersfield Town this Sunday in the League Cup final. The clash is being held at Damson Park, the home of Solihull Moors.

Southampton have only two more games to play in the league for the 2021/22 season.
