Cerys Brown has joined Watford on a loan move from Women’s Super League leaders Chelsea, where she will spend the second half of the season.

Having signed her first professional contract in July, the 18-year-old will join the Championship side on loan until the end of the season. Her current Chelsea contract runs until 2024, with an option for an additional year.

Brown is a versatile defender who can play as a full-back but can also be deployed centrally. This will be vital in helping Damon Lathrope’s team survive as they currently sit bottom of the league table. She will link up with Arsenal dual-sign trio Michelle Agyemang, Laila Harbert and Katie Reid, who she shares the England U19 international stage with.

“Another Young Lioness joins our ranks. We’re delighted to confirm the signing of Cerys Brown on loan from Chelsea!” Watford posted on Twitter as part of the announcement.

Brown first joined the Chelsea academy in 2021 and since then has experienced several triumphs. She made her senior debut in last season’s FA Cup, with a substitute appearance in Chelsea’s 3-1 win over Reading.

Additionally, she was part of the winning squad in the 2022/23 FA Women’s Academy Cup. Her tenacious performances were recognised as she was awarded the U18 Player of the Season award.

The England youth international will link up with her new teammates to face Birmingham City on Sunday. Watford have picked up just nine points so far this season from two wins, three draws and nine defeats — they are level on points with Lewes but behind on goal difference.
