West Ham earn first win of WSL season against Brighton

Following a disappointing defeat to Manchester City, West Ham got their away campaign underway with a trip to Brighton and secured their first three points of the 2023/24 season.

The two sides last met back in May with the Seagulls enjoying a narrow 1-0 win. West Ham had won just four of their previous meetings with Brighton but thanks to Kirsty Smith and Riko Ueki, they returned home with a big victory.

How it went

After an initial spell of almost dominance, it was the visitors who got the goal-scoring action underway. A 13th minute goal from Smith gave the Hammers the crucial early lead as the No.2 fired home Ueki’s saved chance. The remainder of the first half passed with spells of dominance for both sides. However, having been unable to find the equaliser, it was Brighton who were trailing at the break.

A second goal for West Ham put them firmly in control by the 52nd minute. Nodding home a free-kick from Lisa Evans, Ueki was involved once again and gave her side a comfortable lead with 40 minutes still to play. Despite several chances, Brighton were unable to find a route back into the tie.

The victory gave the Irons their first points of the season, kickstarting their WSL campaign after a troublesome previous season.
