In the first of the day’s FA Cup kick-offs, Manchester United eased past Newcastle in a 5-0 win at Leigh Sports Village.

The Magpies went into the tie sitting top of the FA Women’s National League North, five points clear of Burnley. The Reds kicked off their FA Cup campaign hoping to improve on last year’s second-place finish in the competition.

How it went

Ella Toone got the goalscoring action underway with 28 minutes on the clock. The No.7’s shot from just outside the area was enough to put the hosts ahead as she got back to scoring action. A second for Marc Skinner’s side came just nine minutes later as Nikita Parris doubled the scoreline. Parris bagged her brace for the afternoon shortly after the break as the No.22 slotted the ball home from close range.

Rachel Williams got on the scoresheet with less than 20 minutes left to bag her side’s fourth of the tie. Melvine Malard snatched a late fifth for the hosts as she converted an assist from captain Katie Zelem to round off a successful FA Cup outing for United.

Despite the heavy defeat, Newcastle will take plenty of positives from the afternoon. Creating several good chances whilst maintaining their composure throughout the game, the visitors gave a solid account of themselves against a top-flight side.

Newcastle will welcome Nottingham Forest to Kingston Park as they get their league campaign back underway. A trip to face Fylde in the Women’s National League Cup will be followed by a home clash against Wolves.
