Manchester City earned another key Women’s Super League win on Sunday as they look to close the gap between them and Chelsea. The Citizens edged past Tottenham Hotspur in a 2-0 victory, with Khadija Shaw adding another goal to her tally.

The two sides met back in November, with City pulling off a seven-goal thrashing against Robert Vilahamn’s side. The Sky Blues have taken every league point available since suffering a 1-0 defeat at home to Brighton. Prior to the match, Spurs had taken half of the 36 points on offer to them, leaving them sitting sixth in the table.

How it went

Gareth Taylor’s side got the game off to a bright start, instantly putting their opponents under pressure. Just nine minutes into the tie, an own goal from Amy Turner gave the visitors the lead as Spurs failed to deal with a well-worked piece of play from Lauren Hemp. The No.11 used the opportunity to support teammate Jill Roord, who suffered an ACL injury during the Sky Blues last outing against Manchester United.

The remainder of the first half saw the hosts grow into the game, forcing Taylor’s side further up the field. Despite several good chances, Spurs were unable to restore the deadlock, trailing by a single goal at the break.

Shaw made it two for the visitors six minutes after play resumed. The Jamaica international fired the ball home from close range to put her side comfortably ahead. City dominated possession throughout the second half, registering seven shots on Barbora Votikova’s Tottenham goal.

Who do Man City and Tottenham face next?

Tottenham will face Liverpool away in the WSL before hosting Charlton in the FA Cup. Vilahamn’s side will then face Aston Villa ahead of March’s North London derby.

Manchester City will welcome Leicester to the Joie Stadium. The Sky Blues will play league rivals Arsenal and Chelsea within just five days, first facing the Gunners in the FA Cup ahead of a crucial meeting with the reigning league champions.
