Three years with reigning Swedish champions Kopparbergs/Göteborgs FC. Now, Finnish defender Emma Koivisto joins the Seagulls in the WSL on an 18 month deal.
The Finland international comes from three successful seasons with Göteborgs FC in the Swedish top-flight. She joined the Swedish side from Florida State University back in 2018. Koivisto will now reunite with former teammate Megan Connolly, with whom she played with in Florida. In Brighton, she will also have company from her compatriot, midfielder Nora Heroum.
Koivisto has been a key player in Göteborg, where she played 20 out of 22 league games in 2020.
The Finnish defender is versatile and can easily play in different positions. This past season, she played both as a centre-back and on the right-wing for Göteborg. In the Round of 32 of the UEFA Women’s Champion’s League 2020/2021 campaign, she played as a right full-back against Manchester City.
Koivisto scored four goals and made two assists the 2020 season and won an average of 70 percent of her tackles. Her average number in ball interceptions were 4.8 over the season in total.

Internationally, Koivisto has recorded 58 appearances with Finland’s senior national team. During that time, she has scored two goals.
Recently, Koivisto started for Finland when they won against Scotland with 1-0 in the European Championship 2022 qualifier. The December fixture caused the Scots heartache as the only goal of the match came from a counterattack in injury time.
What will she provide to Brighton?
Koivisto is a fighter; strong and fast. She can play in different positions. Her physical strength in a backline accompanied by her running and crossing abilities can bring stability in the defence such as creating opportunities to score going forward.
From the looks of Brighton’s game against Manchester City, Koivisto seems like a perfect fit for the Seagulls at moment.
Her experience from the UWCL can also be important for Brighton. Koivisto played all 180 minutes in Göteborg’s fixtures in the Round of 32, both during the 2019/2020 season against FC Bayern München (2-2) and this season against Manchester City (6-1).
