USWNT squad announced for Summer Series

USWNT Manager Vlatko Andonovski has named his roster for the Summer Series in Austin, Texas next month.

This will be the first time that USA have played in Austin. Andonovski has opted for a strong squad prior to the ties against Portugal, Jamaica and Nigeria.

The roster features 19 NWSL players and four from clubs in Europe. These include Rose Lavelle and Megan Rapinoe from Lyon, plus Manchester City defender Abby Dahlkemper.

Rapinoe, of course, will be looking to get on the scoresheet during the tour, with the prolific forward just one goal away from 60. Should she achieve this, she’ll join an acclaimed list of players who have netted this milestone for the US.

Shannon McMillan, Christen Press, Cindy Parlow and many others are on this exquisite list. For boss Andonovski, however, this is about preparation for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics.

The USA and Nigeria most recently met in group play during the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. A 1-0 victory on Abby Wambach’s final World Cup goal.

USA have played Portugal nine times, all wins, and most recently in 2019 on the Victory Tour after the World Cup. The affair ended in a 3-0 win in St. Paul, which was before Andonovski took over a month later.

The USA has played Jamaica just three times in its history, all in Concacaf qualifying matches. Most recently a 6-0 win in qualifying for the 2019 FIFA World Cup. Like with Nigeria, this will be the first friendly between the teams.
